The Life of Mr. Willie Lee Parker, 85
Willie Lee Parker (affectionately known by family and friends as "Fats"), 85, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2016 in his home in Washington, DC.
Mr. Parker was born to Will Parker and Mary Pierce Parker on November 24, 1930 in Halifax County, North Carolina. Growing up, he had three sisters: Mary Lou, Vernel and Lucille. He also had three brothers: Leroy, James and Buddy. As a child, Mr. Parker resided in Tillery, North Carolina. His father was a farmer. At a young age, Mr. Parker learned the importance and gratification of hard work and caring for others. As part of his daily routine, he worked his family's farm. Often times, at the directions of his father, he and his siblings were sent to check on neighboring farmers to see if they needed help.
During his youth, he developed a fondness for reading. Growing up, he read the newspaper daily to his father. This cultivated a love of history and in-depth knowledge of the world. He could hold a conversation with regard to any historical time. Some of his favorite readings included, biographies of Abraham Lincoln, President Obama and Dr. Martin Luther King. His passion for reading stayed with him for the rest of his life. His last moment was enjoyed reading the newspaper.
Mr. Parker had many interests. He was an avid gardener, creating and maintaining a beautiful yard. He enjoyed playing golf and was a life-long Washington Redskin fan.
He was a proud member of the United Stated Army. He served during the Korean War. Throughout his military career. He traveled the world, visiting many countries to include: France, Germany and China. His travels broadened his view of the world.
On June 20, 1959, he married Martha Marion Hill. Mr. & Mrs. Parker made Shepard Park of Washington, DC, their permanent home in June, 1966. He worked for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from 1960 to 1995. He held a number of positions throughout his career; ranging from: Metro Bus Driver to Station Manager. He was also one of the first Metro Rail Conductors. Receiving numerous honors and wards for excellent services and achievements.
Mr. Parker was an active member and Deacon at his local church; Northminister Presbyterian Church. Additionally, he worked various charities and was also a member of the Lions Club.
Beyond his work and charity experiences, he dedicated his life to caring for his loved ones. He was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to all that knew him.
Anyone that had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Parker, knew that his kind nature and jovial spirit were contagious. His very presence changed the atmosphere. Instead of mourning Mr. Willie Lee Parker demise, the family would like to celebrate his joyous life. He is survived by His Wife: Martha Marion Parker; His Son: Christopher and wife Sonja and His Daughter: Pamela; Grandchildren: Nataja, Courtney, Christopher and Nicholas; His Siblings: Mr. James, Pastor Leroy Parker and wife Ella Louise, Mother Lucille Cheek and husband Bishop William Henry; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, church family, other relatives and friends.
His remains will repose in church one hour prior to the service.
Floral Attendants and Pall Bearers will be his nieces and nephews.
Minister Willie Moore will be Musician-In-Charge.
