The Long well lived life of Mr. Wilbert Abney, 89


A private viewing for immediate family only will be held Sunday, September 16, 2018, 12:30 PM, followed by a public viewing from 1 to 6 PM at the funeral parlor.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, September 17, 2018, 12:00 O'Clock High Noon, New Jerusalem Holiness Church, Hwy 186, Garysburg, NC.

Burial will follow in the Gorham Family Cemetery, Hwy 186, Gumberry, NC

Pastor Alice Jones-Brown will be the eulogist.

It was in his home that the death angel came and whispered "peace be thine", to Mr. Wilbert Abney, 89 of Garysburg, NC to come from labor to reward on Friday, September 7, 2018.

Deacon Wilbert Abney, Sr., the son of the late John Henry and Winnie Abney was born on October 14, 1928 in Saluda , South Carolina.  Wilbert was the fourth child of their union.

He was educated in the public schools of Saluda, South Carolina.  He met and married the "Love of his Life," Mary H. Bouknight in 1949.  To this union, they had eight children: Patricia, Wilbert, Jr.(Buddy), Helen D. (Lois), Bobby W., Ronnie, Debbie, Anthony(Tony) and Vincent.

He worked for the District of Columbia in the Agricultural Department for 30 years until his retirement.

Wilbert found Christ early in his life.  Always taking his faith with him, he joined New Jerusalem Holiness Church under the leadership of Bishop Rufus Easter and later moved his membership to St. Mary's Holiness Church, Jackson, North Carolina under the leadership of Pastor Rosa Banks.  He was a devoted Deacon and member of St. Mary's Holiness Church.

Wilbert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary H. Abney, His Children:  Patricia, Bobby, Anthony, and Wilbert Jr.; also Grandchildren: Riley Jr., Mark Anthony, Troy, Anthony Arrington and Anthony Jr.(Tony); His Siblings: James Abney, Pauline Hare, Ben L. Abney, D. Ruth Tucker and Evaleen Abney.

He leaves to mourn his passing: His Children:  Helen D. Strong and husband Riley of Oxen Hill, Md., Ronnie Abney and wife Queen,  Debbie Abney of Garysburg, NC, and Vincent and wife Linda of Washington, DC; Grandchildren:  Jacqueline, Tyisha, Lakeisha, Rashawn, Courtney, Terri V., Justyce Person (Lamar), Destiny, Tyreek, Ladeka, Frederick, Michael Hawkins and Vincent Jr; Survivors also include: Great-grandhildren: Rapheal, Anthony(AJ), Chloe, Lamar and Prince; Daughter-in-Law: Diane Abney; Two Sisters:  Annie Mathews of Saluda, SC and Ellen Wither of Washington, DC; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends; Dedicated extended family:  Sharon Miles, Debbie Shearin, Dorothy Garner, Tyree and Kendrick Steele.
