Obituary

The Life of Mother Verlene Broadnax Lewis,89

God saw the road was getting rough, The hills were hard to climb, He gently closed her weary eyes, And whispered, "Peace Be Thine."

On Thursday morning March 10, 2016, approximately 11:33 a.m., Verlene answered God's call to get her reward. Verlene was born May 31, 1926. She was the oldest of seven children, born to the late Courtney Broadnax. Her mother passed when she and her siblings were very young, therefore, since she was the oldest, she had to raise her four younger siblings.

Verlene attended the public schools of Northampton County. She saw the need of a personal savior, so she confessed Christ and joined the Parker's Chapel Baptist Church where her membership remained until her demise. She was a faithful member and served on the Usher Board where she served as President.

Verlene married the late Joseph Lewis, Sr. on November 15, 1947. God blessed this union with eleven wonderful children, which two preceded her in death. Her brother George and sister Jane Broadnax also preceded her in death.

Those left to cherish her memories are her children; Three Daughters: Ethelene Morgan and husband Arthur and Sharon Lewis all of Daytona, FL and Evelyn Grant and husband William Lee of Seaboard, NC, Six Sons: Robert Broadnax of Newark, NJ, George Lewis of the home, Joseph Lewis, Jr. and wife Pamela and Maurice Lewis and wife Phyllis all of Atlanta, GA, Antonio Lewis and wife Cynthia and Ronald Lewis all of Union, NJ; 28-Grandchildren; 30-Great Grandchildren; 8-Great-Great Grandchildren; Five Sisters: Mrs. Mary Patterson and Mrs. Clara Peterson and husband Willie all of Jackson, NC, Mrs. Annie Albritton and Mrs. Julia Ford both of Chesapeake, VA and Mrs. Cornelia and husband Ernie of Philadelphia, PA; One Uncle: Deacon Hansel Johnson of Garysburg, NC; One Sister-In-Law: Ester Mae Mason of Scotland Neck, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family and friends.

Floral Attendants and Pall Bearers will be nieces and nephews.
