Deacon Melvin Brooks was born September 1, 1951 in South Bronx, New York. He was one of four children born to the union Deena (Florida) and Harry (North Carolina) Brooks, who made their home in New York, but were both originally from Garysburg, NC.

Melvin Brooks received his formal education from the New York Public School System.

In his twenties, Melvin, often referred to as "Brooks", moved to North Carolina. Melvin held various construction jobs. He had acquired the trade of a Concrete Finisher. Melvin worked with BEK Construction Company, English Construction Company, JP Stevens Construction Company and also did construction work for the Township of Roanoke Rapids. Because of his hard work ethic and dedication, Melvin was quickly promoted to the position of Concrete Foreman. This position gave him the authority and ability to extend a hand to many residents of the states of VA and NC in need of employment.

While in NC, Melvin met  and married the love of his life, Phyllis Rainey and on September 11, 1976, they were United In Holy Matrimony. To this union, four children were born, Melvin, Ricky, Wanda and Teresa. Melvin and Phyllis made a home for their family on Freeman Street, Garysburg, NC and have resided there ever since.

Melvin gave his life to the Lord at Evangelistic Church of Deliverance in Weldon, North Carolina, under the leadership of then Elder William H. Cheek, where he faithfully served until his passing.  Being chosen of God, Elder Cheek ordained him with the title of Deacon and was given the responsibility to care for many members of the church including those who were sick and shut-in. Deacon Brooks dutifully served on the Male Choir, Senior Choir, and United Voices of Deliverance.  During the weekday, Deacon Brooks could be found almost every morning opening the church for 6 :00 AM morning prayer. Deacon Brooks was also known to care for and attend to the sick and shut-in Mother's of the church. When greeted by someone who would say, "good to see you", Deacon Brooks was often heard to say "good to be seen".

Melvin departed this life July 19, 2019 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC.
