Obituary

The Legacy and Life of Ms. Mary E. Rook, 71

There will be a private viewing for immediate family ONLY on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 12:30 PM at the funeral parlor, followed by a public viewing from 1 to 6 PM.

The family is asking everyone who is going to drive in the funeral procession to the church to meet at Coleman Funeral Home Friday at  12:00 AM.

Ms. Rook will lie in state in the church Friday, one hour prior to the service.

Funeral will be Friday, March 23, 2018, 1:00 O'Clock In The Afternoon, St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church, 408 Mulberry St., Weldon, NC 27890.

Floral Attendants will be nieces and great nieces. Pall Bearers will be nephews and cousins


Burial will be in Cool Spring Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Gaston, NC.

Mary Elizabeth Rook, born to the late Louis Underdue and John Squire on January 19 , 1947 in Northampton County, North Carolina. She was raised by her Maternal Grandparents: the late Claude and Otis Turner of Gaston, North Carolina. She is known to her children and grandchildren as "Mama" and to her friends and family as "Bat".

During her early life she professed faith in Christ, was baptized and joined Cool Spring Baptist Church, Gaston, NC, but later joined St. Peters Baptist Church, Weldon, NC. She received her education through the Northampton County Public Schools and shortly after, joined the workforce.

In 1971 she was United in Holy Matrimony to Rayfield Rook and the two would reside in Weldon, NC to raise their family.

A few of Mama's life joys were helping others, family gatherings, cooking, and baking. She was respected by many and loved by all for showing her unconditional love, acceptance of all, and outspoken personality. Her generosity was vivid in the community, welcoming and feeding all those who graced her door step, especially with her warm sweet potato jacks and fried chicken. While raising seven children, she was also a strong mother figure to her nieces and nephews.

She was be employed by Great Escape as a cook, and later at Hardee's. Her passion however, was being a Home Health Nurse where she would have the privilege of taking care of the elderly. For many years she took pride in her work and worked diligently to ensure the comfort and well-being of others.

On Saturday, March 17, 2018, Mama quietly departed this earthly life for eternal rest in her place of residence.

In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was preceded in death by her son: William Turner and her brother: James Turner.

Her spirit and wisdom lives forever in the hearts and minds of all those left to cherish her memories; Her Children: Janet Bennett and husband Roger of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Ray Turner and wife Adreanne of Greenville, NC, Terry Rook of Gaston, NC, Otis Rook of Weldon, NC, John Rook and wife Lakeithia of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Jesse Rook and fiance Phylichia of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Her Grandchildren: Takiysha Barber and husband Cornelius, James Turner, Sherreka Turner, Raeven Turner, Terry Rook Jr., William Turner Jr., Ray Turner Jr., Brandon Turner, Deshonda Gregory, Alyssa Kerns, Brianna Kerns, Jalen Blackwell, Cierra Joyner, Arianna Rook, Jesse Rook Jr., Jordan Rook, John Rook Jr.; Her Great-grandchildren: Jalen Edwards, Lexus Barber, Jalexia Barber, and William Turner II; Her Siblings: Ruby Smith of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Theresa Garner and husband Linwood of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Melvin Underdue and wife Sharon of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Bobby Underdue and wife Linda of Rocky Mount, NC, Debra Vick of Gaston, NC, Sterlin Clark of Roanoke Rapids, NC, John Squire and wife Vandella of Oklahoma, and Brenda Squire of Norfolk, VA; Four-Step Daughters: Macy, Trina, Rae Marie, and Lavoris; Adopted Sons: Daryl Scott, Eric Ellis, and Garfield Green; Special Friends: Deloris Davis, Alberta Solomon, Claretha Bradley, and Tina Williams; Special Cousin: Geraldine Rook; and a host of very special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will greatly miss and always cherish the precious time they shared.
