Joesph Chapman Gross, Sr. departed this life on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at the E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center, Lillington, NC. He was 97 years old, being born on September 17, 1912, in Philadelphia, PA Joesph was the last surviving sibling of six brothers-Dan, Fred, John, Joesph Leroy, and Wilmer- born to Edward Gross and Annie Thomas Gross of Maryland.
Joesph Chapman Gross, Sr. was a devoted family man who worked for forty fours years before his retirement from Gaynor's and Star Glassworks located in Salem, New Jersey. He was united in Holy Matrimony on Frebruary 14, 1934, to Mary Elizabeth Butler, who was born on October 11, 1915, in Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada. Joesph and Mary were married for 68 years before her death on March 24, 2002. To this union two children were born: Roger A. Gross and Joesph C. Gross, Jr. of Gaston, NC predeceased his father on December 12, 2008.
Shortly after the death of his beloved wife-Mary, Joesph C. Gross, Sr. moved from Willingboro, NJ to Gaston, NC. He leaves behind his loving Daughter-In-Law and his "angel" caretaker of many years: Elder Allie Marie Gross, and his devoted Son and Daughter-In Law: Attorney Roger Gross and wife, Janice, Lansing, Michigan.
Also left to cherish Joesph's memory was his favorite nephew: Dr. Leroy Gross and wife-Shirley, Yorktown, VA; his only surviving Sister-In--Law: Margaret Bruce Gross, New Castle, Delaware(his late brother Wilmer's wife) his five grandchildren: Joesph Gross, III, Charlotte, NC, Antoine Gross and wife, Janice, Atlanta, Georgia, Anne Marie Gross Evand, Roanoke Rapids, NC; Akono Gross and wife Naomi, East Landing, Michigan; Captain Jayana Gross Pyanat and husband Captain William Pyant, both stationed overseas in the Middle East; and five great-grandchildren,: Allie and Amari Evans, both of Roanoke Rapids, NC Alexis, Aleyna, and Joesph Gross, East Landing, Michigan; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Faith Hope and Charity Church 1408 Elm Street Extension, Weldon, North Carolina with Elder Marie Gross, Officiating and Elder Ruth Parker, Pastor. Interment will be held Tuesday, April 6, 2020 in Laurel Hill Cemetery Jacksonville Road, Burlington, New Jersey.
