Burial: Church cemetery
Betty was born June 25 , 1937. She was the eldest daughter of the late Marvin Sr. and Mary Lizzie Newell-Harrison. Four siblings preceded her in death (Rena Mae, James "Tommy", Robert "Zach", and Marvin "Buck" Harrison). Also preceding her in death was her significant other, Edward "Charlie" Garner, Sr.
She received her education at John Armstrong Chaloner School. She was a lifetime member of Simmons Grove Missionary Baptist church. Betty spent numerous years in the food service industry, which makes perfect sense because she's always had a heart to serve.
Betty enjoyed sitting on her back porch with family and friends, singing, dancing and listening to music; her favorite of which was Michael Jackson. Betty was always on the move, couldn't sit still, and loved to be outside. She took pride in everything she did whether it was cooking for her family, serving customers, working in her garden, interior decorating or perfectly folding every piece of laundry.
At no time could you be in her presence and not feel completely comfortable. She welcomed everyone into her home to feel just like family. Although she was incredibly comical, she was a small firecracker who would give you a "real word" for your situation. Often times, those "words" could be hard and harsh, but they would always be nothing short of the truth.
Betty was an independent, strong, smart black woman who would give you her last, if you needed it. She was completely devoted to her family in every way and spent her entire life making sure they were taken care of. She taught us that being a mother meant sacrifice, she taught us that being a sister meant compromise and she taught us that being a friend was honorable.
Betty has touched the lives of each person she has ever had the pleasure of meeting. Once you knew her, you knew her, and your life was forever changed. Not only did she have a special bond with many of us, her most important bond was with the good lord above.
She leaves to cherish her memory Two Sons: Andrew Jones and Jerry Jones, Sr., both of the home, One Daughter: Tracy Jones S Sledge and husband Tyrl of Raleigh, NC, Four Grandchildren: Asia Lynch and husband Courtney, Jerry Jones, Jr., both of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Kahlil Ransom and Nuri Sledge, both of Raleigh, NC, Four Great Grandchildren: Cour'nez, Cahmad & Chyna Lynch, Romeo Jones, all of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Her Siblings: Christina Harrison of Capital Heights, MD, Hedy Mason of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Marva Faye Robinson and husband Willie Lee of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Gloria Walker of Lakeridge, VA, Teretha Adams of Arlington, VA, Dennis Harrison and wife Gwendolyn of Baldwin, NY, Roy Harrison and wife Marilyn of Stone Mountain, GA, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives church family and countless friends.
The bell made a sound for Betty Jean Harrison-Jones, 82 on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 in Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, NC to come from labor to reward. Betty is a native of Halifax County, the Lincoln Heights area of Roanoke Rapids, NC.
