The Life of Mrs. Isabelle H. Dickens, 91
Mrs. Isabelle H. Dickens, age 91, departed this earthly life to begin her eternal walk with God at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC on March 17, 2013. On May 19, 1921, she was the eldest of five children born to Mr. Zanoah N. Hicks, and Mrs. Lillian T. Hicks in Oxford, NC.
During her childhood, she joined Big Zion A.M.E. Church in Oxford where she served as pianist for several years. She served as a Trustee, Pastor's Aide, and Pianist for many decades at St. Matthews A.M.E. Church in Weldon, NC until her passing.
She was an honors graduate of Mary Potter High School and later Fayetteville State Teachers College (now Fayetteville State University). She also completed further study in education at NC College for Negroes (now NC Central University). She was joined in holy matrimony in June 1948 to Mr. Thomas E. Dickens, and they shared a devoted parternship for 52 years until his demise in June 2001.
Mrs. Dickens was a wife and mother to her family beyond comparison, and she taught her own and many others' children the importance of hard work, determination, and high ethical standards. Having instructed several generations of primary and secondary students in general subjects and music, she will be widely remembered in Northampton and Halifax Counties and beyond for being a fair-minded and conscientious public schoolteacher.
She was predeceased by her son Dr. Victor F. Dickens, but has left to celebrate her legacy her son and longtime caregiver Mr. Thomas E. Dickens, Jr. of the home; two daughters, Dr. Lillian D. Riddick and husband Frank of Gaithersburg, Md, and Dr. Jeanne I. Dickens of Brownsburg, IN; one sister, Mrs. Lillian H. Miller of Oxford, NC; one brother-in-law, Mr. Alexander Williams of Oxford, NC; three sisters-in-law, Ms. Doreatha Dickens of Camden, NJ, Mrs. Lenora D. Taylor of Philadelphia, PA, and Mrs. Nellie HIcks of Oxford, NC; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Judith W. Dickens of Tucker, GA; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a legion of other relatives, former colleagues and students, and friends.
Funeral Arrangements for Mrs. Isabelle H. Dickens, 91 of Hwy 301, Garysburg, NC wil be Sunday, March 24, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Matthew A.M.E. Church in Weldon, NC with the Rev. Dr. Caroll Dickens officating. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery, Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC.
A private viewing will be Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 12:30 for immediate family members only. A public viewing will begin at 1:00 P.M. The family will ONLY receive visitors at the Coleman Funeral Home on Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
The Dickens Family prefers to greet friends and family at the funeral parlor on Saturday rather than at the family home place.
